'71 280S 108~ Need NeW Calipers???

Do I actually need to replace both front calipers? The guy tells me that the fluid has leaked, thus the calipers can't be repaired. When I look at these heavy metal substantial components, it's hard for me to believe they can't be repaired. Please give me the whole scoop on this brake-fixing business. And where can I get the best price on replacing the calipers, if that's what I HaVe to do? Thanks Much! Karin

You can either have the old calipers rebuilt or you can buy new ones; problem is you'd have to find a mechanic willing to rebuild them and that's not likely. If you're into saving money and not so concerned with genuine MB parts, it looks like Napa auto parts stores have calipers for your car from $80-$100 each. I'd bet the dealer will be twice that.

Check out www.********.com - I bought a pair of aftermarket front calipers there several years ago for my '72 250 and have not had any problems. Probably between $40-$55, depending on whether you have ATE or Bendix.

And to answer your other question, YES, always deal with front brake and suspension parts in pairs. Do the left when you do the right. This keeps your car driving straight ahead when you want it to.

Also, replace the rubber hoses. Do *NOT* damage the hard metal line that connects the caliper to the rubber hose, as that's not an inexpensive part.

The rebuilt calipers from Rock auto are fine, not to mention easy to get.

Has anyone tried the places that sleeve them with brass or stainless steel?

aftermarket rebuilds are not that expensive and worth the piece of mind, try the Rock Auto as suggested

Thanks to those who replied.
How do I know whether I have ATE or Bendix Calipers?
VIN = 10801612075944.

Here's to good brakes and on the road again!

Your old calipers should have the manufacturer's name or trademark cast into the housing - Ate, Bendix or Girling.
