M110 engine problems

The engine sits in a 280 SE 80 mod Euro, W126, 250000 km. I've droven this car almost dailey for over 4 years now without any trouble. then last week the problems took over.
First it wouldnt start. Then it eventually started and ran fine for about 5 seconds, then died out as if I turned the key. Left it alone for a couple of days till I found the time to have a look at it again. Then it was at first all dead but finally it fires but wont run. Charched battery and tried again, same symptom. Took out the spark plugs and noticed a very oily film on them. Then as by instict I took out the oilstick to find out that the oil level was double of normal. So to make this short: believe it or not, cause I wouldn't at first, fuel finds a way into the engine. The only logical explanation I can come up with is some vaccum erros, but where is the connection?

The following tests have been done so far: (before the oil/gas-mixture problem occured) :

Compression, ok
Fuel delivery volume ok
Spark and timing ok
Vacuum lines seems to be in place and uncracked

Anyone, please help!

Jan

Leaking cold start injector, or maybe the cold start injector staying open? Try disconnecting the power supply to it, and see if it starts.
Might want to check the archives in the Vintage forum section as well.

I am really not expert on electrical things, but my 84 110 euro needed a fuel pump relay...for some reason your's sounds similar.

Thanks for response.

found a thread about a pressure regulator / damper with a vacuum line which sucked gas into the engine. Will follow that lead tomorrow.

As for the fuel pump I will run a second test on it to be sure. All the sudden starting problems points to the pump (filter new last year), and the relay too.

Never realised all these details about our wonderful cars until these problems began and I started to read this forum. Learnt a lot these days for sure.

And to those posts that puts a finger down for the 110 engine: 27 years and 250K km without a major problem with the engine or the CIS isnt too bad

Thanks again, and I'll keep you updated.

Problems fixed!!

the engine plays music again like only an inline 6 can do

Tested the fuel pump for a second time. The pump cuts out with a rattling noise after 10 to 30 secs.

A trip to the used parts dealer got me a "new" pump and a pressure regulator/damper, dont know the right name but it is the device between the FD and warm up compensator. This damper I suspected to suck gas into the head via an attached vacuumline (meant for vent I Think). From other threads I understand that this device when broke, can cause this.

together with new plugs that was it. Many hours with reading Threads and posts and testing, but not much of a spending in$$.

Thanks again for response, and thanks all others who contributed in other threads helping me fix this.

Greetings, Jan

Nice wrench!

BTW, that's a pressure damper, and its purpose is to smooth out pulsations in the fuel flow, at least according to the book.

I am not sure what part you are speaking of but I remember my dad talking about soldering a small tin can into the fuel line upside down which provided a permanent bubble of air. The idea was to provide a place for the fuel to expand when you shut the car off and it heat sinks the line. It also would avoid pushing extra fuel into the carb bowl.

Back in the fifties and sixties the content of gasoline changed making it more prone to evaporate and cause vapor lock. The early caddies like my 53 had the fuel pump mounted up by the air cleaner almost. Convenient for service but with the more volitile fuel that is now available you simply cannot drive one set up that way. You have to add an electric pusher pump back by the tank to fill the carburator after the fuel vaporizes in it on a warm day.
