Am I.... missing something?

So I'm tracing my vacuum lines around to find any leaks or misplacements when I realize that there is nothing going to the distributor... upon futher inspection, I don't have an advance solenoid! What the heck?

73 280 (114 w/ m110).

Also, it looks like the distributor cap isn't fitting perfectly. Plastic got chewed up a bit by the rotor.

I've done some reading and from what I can tell that solenoid is for vacuum retard... default is advanced. Which may explain why the 280 runs GREAT but idles like crap. Not totally sure though.

It looks like the rotor might be too big.

The advance device you are referring to would be vacuum operated.

I have never seen a car of this era lacking one. Pre emmission cars had vac advance.

my 74 bmw had one that advanced and then retarded. That was an evil power sapping unit that I converted back to a pre emission spec and really woke up the engine.

According to my Chilton's your car definately had vac advance from the factory. I have seen engines with all mechanical advance. My bmw bike had that. I think it makes an engine less responsive to throttle input without it. It is possible you have a special distributor that is all mechanical advance....I have never seen or heard of that though.

If you put a timing light on it it should have from around 36 to 44 degrees of total advance at high rpm as a rule of thumb.

If your car lacks appropriate ignition advance it will lack responsiveness and not perform correctly. It may overheat too if the spark is too retarded.

If it is supposed to have a vac device there should be a slot on the side of the distributor body right above the flat plate where the points sit and a pin for connecting the flat bar that goes to the vac diaphram. The pin, iirc, takes some sort of a clip to retain the flat bar.

If you get the distributor number I will check to see if it is a correct distributor for your engine, and give you the correct advance numbers.

Good luck.
