Instead of selling my 111 chassis 63 220 SEb cabriolet, I am contemplating resolving the lack of horsepower situation by installing an available 190hp M130 engine and transmission in place of the original anemic 115 hp M127. The questions are: Since the M130 was later used in a 111 chassis, is this engine out of a 71, 108 chassis 280SE a bolt in swap? Is a 71 automatic that comes with this engine the same transmission that I have in my 63? For the purist out there, I am not concerned with authenticity as the car is my daily driver and if I can get the performance to my liking, I intend to keep it until either it or I succomb.

Keep the engine with the tranny. They are fundamentally different transmissions that have different control and valve body requirements. Also, there should be a solenoid or two on the engine's fuel distributor that mate up to switches on the transmission.
You might need to add a relay or two to make these solenoids work. The relevant schematic is in the 108 service manual. lastly, you might have a problem with the front drive shaft coupling. Keeping the 280se drive shaft may be the right solution. Otherwise, getting a used 280se/c drive shaft will do it. You'll know you can't use the sedan's drive shaft if your tape measure says so. -CTH |
