Greetings

I have just had the please of acquiring a 1965 190 d. the body is in perfect condition (minus some tiny rust spots) and am looking to learn more about it. Some problems im having with it are--> water leaking from the block somewhere behind the injection pump (were freeze plugs used in these cars). The car will run thru the 4 forward gears fine but i cannot find reverse ( does the car have to be running to find it). and last but not least the car was running low on diesel (prolly 1 gallon in the tank) and it started to smoke white. is this a lean mixture or water?

possible causes of any of these situations or corrections are greatly appreciated

White smoke generally means that coolant is getting into the combustion chambers. This results from either a bad headgasket or a cracked head. Since you said it is leaking coolant, maybe you just have a bad headgasket. Further indications of bad headgaskets are oil in the coolant or air bubbles in the coolant when the car is running. Overheating is also a sympton. Hope this helps.

Reverse should be like 1st, but pull up on the handle so that it then moves MORE to the left before going up.

If you wind up needing a motor, use a 220D or 240D used motor unless you just have to stay "authentic". The extra power will be most welcome.

I had the same problem,
The Shifter is probably loose as there are urethane bushings that rotted out preventing it from getting the full swing to the left. the shifter should feel fairly tight. I good snap to the left and up is required to jump to reverse.
Good luck with finding the water leak
If I can offer any assistance,I will try to help with as many questions as I can as I have a 67 200D Heck Flossen my self .
Regards,
Bryan
