280S won't idle w/ new starter

That's right, I changed out the starter, and now she won't idle...if I keep my foot in the gas it will keep running but it dies quickly if the throttle is released.

The car is a 1970 280S 6 cylinder automatic.

I know I got the wires on in the right positions, I believe, but the Solenoid looked a little different (it was shorter). The other weird thing is the power windows now refuse to work.

What the heck?

I just installed a pertronix and it worked great, car ran better than ever, but the starter was weak so I replaced it.

I guess the old starter will be going back in the car once the exhaust to see if that magically fixes things.

The only other thing I can think of is I added a can of sea foam yesterday, but it ran great the rest of the afternoon, post sea foam application.

Did you work exclusively under the car to replace the starter or did you work above as well?

Almost sounds like a bad vaccum leak caused by disconnecting a hose...

both

I worked both on top and underneath, I did drill a hole in the tunnel of the firewall yesterday to gain access to the 10mm hex bolt, but I drove it a bunch after that and it was fine, so I don't think the hole did anything.

I'm in agreement that vacuum might be of issue here, but I didn't notice anything out of sorts. Only other thing I did do was break a connection between a sensor in the front of the front carb, which had been spliced previously to a relay on the fender, so I replaced the butt connector.

Oops

Maybe it's the wire I missed. I'll let you know in a bit...

Sometimes I swear I'm destined to waste time pointlessly when I have the least of it.

Apparently, there are 3 ring connectors that go on the main positive terminal of the solenoid.

The car runs. Now the idle is messed up because I knew the carbs weren't balanced so I maxed out the idle screw adjusters trying to keep the car running. I am stupid.

Have a nice day.

Always, always, always go back and check the last thing you did! 95% of all "new" problems we cause ourselves. Knocking loose vacuum lines, breaking wires and forgetting stuff.

I've been doing this mechanical work for 30+ years and I still create my own problems. An old maxim I live by.

"Trust no one's work, double-check your own"
