Replacement Injectors
After falling off my chair when checking the prices for fuel injectors for my 72 280SE 4.5, I searched the web and found this link:
http://www.automotivepartsnetwork.com/autoparts/lookup/auto_parts_lookup_listparts.asp?AAIA_ID=1193464&AUTOPN_ID=5 does anybody have experience with those? Are they any good? Buying eight new Bosch Injectors would amount to what I paid for the cruiser. Thks! |

I'd go with their reman ones. I can read the P/N and verify it's correct. And honestly, a reman injector (new pintle, sonic cleaned and leak tested, and new mesh filter) is as good as a new one.

Ron: If they leak.
Not from the nozzle - that could be just the injectors needing a good sonic clean. But from the plastic housing. Otherwise, they typically last for several hundred thousand miles. If they leak when closed, after a cleaning, or develop an irregular spray pattern (due to the center valve wearing), then they need replacement. Oh, also if they rust closed. You probably want to replace those, don't bother cleaning - the spray will be irregular. I just got a new reason to go to the junkyard. Pickup more injectors, there should be 8 still waiting for me.

One option is having your inj cleaned/repaired. I used a shop called Cruizin performance who cleaned/repaired/renewed seals on all my injectors for around $100. They even supply you with a cool before/after flowsheet report.
Just make sure you can put the injectors back in service as soon as you get them back. In my case, I waited several months (top end rebuild) and two of my injectors were stuck open. Owner said he would reclean the stuck ones, but I found two spares from this forum. |

I'll give another nod to cruzin. They did a great job on the injectors for my MFI Alfa a few years ago. It idled better and had better throttle response afterwards, but they were REALLY gunked up beforehand. The flow charts are pretty cool.

yup.... http://www.cruzinperformance.com/
Turnaround time is about 2 weeks total. Again, be sure to put the cleaned injectors into service as soon as possible. If you let them sit after cleaning, they might stick open.... |

I'm not sure exactly which supplier my mechanic sourced mine from, but the BOSCH rebuilt injectors have a 1 year warranty and ran me 135.00 each.
My old ones, which were original, weren't really maintaining a spray pattern anymore. I think my mechanic described them as "dribbling." The difference with new injectors was pretty amazing. Ann (back from vacation!)

so how big a job to remove them from the rails without trashing all the 30+ year old connections and the like?

removal
...and what's the trick getting them all off without dumping gasoline all over everything?
Disconnecting the battery would be a good idea I assume? |

Removal - not too bad. Bear in mind, I am no expert and you must practice safety procedures. I'm just a guy who may (or may not) know what he's talking about....That said, here's what I do:
Remove the batt + air cleaner, then remove all the wiring (carefully of course). Next, pick a spot to remove the first fuel connection - it is under pressure. Won't gush out, but gas will come out (so be SAFE). To get the injectors out, I remove a whole bank at at time, then remove the injector from the rail. Each inj is attached to manifold with a 10 mm nut. When removing, use a socket with some grease in it so you don't drop the nut. Otherwise the nut falls down below the intake - you'll never see it again until you remove the intake (hey, that's where it went...) You'll definitely want to renew ALL the fuel injection hoses and use new special fuel injection hose clamps. Note you want HIGH PRESSURE fuel lines. You probably need to replace the hose going up to the MAP sensor anyway.... |

before removal
Always clean / wash the injector top area to
prevent road grit debris in the hole, Those old black rubber seals must be replaced, they turn hard and will not seal again. Yes if you drop rubber debris in it will vanish eventually, no panic just try to minimize the chunks falling inward. Replace the injector body seal ring too. This is a normal maintenance job This reminds me, I have to do the 3.5.... |

I *think* I remember cruzin replenishing the O-rings as part of their deal.
