Window Motor on a 108

I took the broken window regulator out of the left front door yesterday. It was pretty easy to do, but I do have a couple of questions:

The regulator gear was really worn in a two different places, which, considering how the window was acting, makes perfect sense. In step 2 I separated regulator from motor and found the motor gear to be full of metal shavings and not in perfect shape either. I neither want to pay $ 400 fo both motor and regulator, nor do I ever want to touch this ever again. So how concerned do I have to be that a motor gear with 37 years of use will damage the regulator gears quickly? Does anybody know if replacement gears are available, and how to put them in????

Second question: The motor I pulled out doesn't look anything like the motors I have found online for this year/model, which is 1970, 280SEL. Everything I see looks like it is aluminum all around, while mine has an aluminum head, attached to a black plastic housing with one green and one brown wire coming out of the bottom. Bosch Part # is 0132 001 101.

Any info on this anywhere?

Thanks in Advance!

Does it look like this?

All the ones I've seen for the 108s have an aluminum body (I've had mine out and swapped them between cars). These are advertised as 107 and they sound like yours and the part number you used brings these up.

I'm not saying this auction is correct though. Or I am. Just odd.

As for replacing them as a unit - I've been advised that its a good idea. Part of the problem is that there isn't a "stop" on the window. That motor keeps going as long as you push the button. Over zealous window button pressing may kill the motor/regulator before its time.

Hm, odd... every 108 I've ever seen in the junkyard has the motors you never see, Ann! I've seen 10 different 108's, give or take... all with the kind dspeer has. Including mine.

I have a spare motor somewhere. Maybe 2.

W108 power window regulators

Is your regulator made of steel or potmetal?

There were early regulators that were made of steel, and the transmission for gearing down was external to the Bosch motor armature shaft with a short (~1 inch long) rubber coupling connecting the motor to the transmission.

These units were superceded to the potmetal design where the transmission was integrally attached to the end of the motor.

Potmetal

The pot metal warps causing funky stresses on the gears then the gears get all chewed up....
All of the motors I've seen have the black plastic covers... Left and right motors are all the "same" for the period but there were some variation in the # of teeth on the drive gear. Keep that in mind while shopping..

Hello Ann:
That's exactly the one. If there was an easy way to check, I'd open one of the other doors and check what those look like - who knows. Taking everything apart, everything lined up and matched accurately - down to the color of the cables. So now I am really confused about what motor to buy.

Hmmmm......

Ok, everyone else has plastic as well.

Not that it matters, but the motors I bought in '96 to put in Henrietta had aluminum covers too - I took 'em out again last Spring for Brunhilda. All I know is they worked just fine after sitting around for 7 years!

What I'm interested in knowing more about is the regulators. It sounds as if there is a flimsier version... Are they interchangable with all motors?

Ann
