I've had a number of blocks sleeved, with complete success. The machinist leaves a step at the bottom of the bore and the sleeve bottoms against it. The cylinder head holds it at the top. The press fit of the sleeve in the block would likely hold it anyway.

The first honing step is complete, now all I have to do is get some pistons.

How do I work this thing?

Oh, that's how!

This is pretty easy!

The engine...

OK, no fatso comments...

Well, I checked the head for warpage, and it is indeed mighty. So, I'll pull the head off the replacement engine and check it out. It's a 230 engine so maybe it will work.

The aluminum heads can often be straightened. My favorite machinist has a rig that puts tension on the aluminum head and he puts it in the oven over night. After it is pretty straight he resurfaces it.

Well, M180 engine fans, I ordered the pistons and a few other things from Westfields 4X4 in England and they were supposed to be delivered Friday but the FEX EX drone either could not find my house or couldn'r read my phone number on the delivery ticket. So, for now, the parts are back at the distribution center. Other items have been delivered by FED EX to another house on the next street over.

Well just give them that address and you will surely get it at your house!

Good luck....good work so far.

Last night in class, I was able to grind the valve faces and the seats. I hope to finish the block honing today because my pistons arrived. I have to get the conn rods all the same weight and see if I can get the pistons close as well. They don't have much of a balance pad. I also have my conn rod bearings. Finally, I have to cut the valve seat hole in the head to replace cyl 6's intake seat.

I'll follow up with some pics too, I haven't had a chance to download them.

Honing Pics

Yesterday I was able to continue honing the block. The Master needed to know what kind of rings were in the pistons. A call to a buddy in California and then to an engine rebuilder gave the necessary info. Here are some pics.

Bonus Pics

One of the men in the program has a Porsche 944T block that had a small problem. He cut it in half for demonstration purposes.

I'm sure you have the rings in a "display" position. You should not have any of the gaps aligned with the wrist pins.

Last night, Tuesday, I cleaned up all the block threads with a thread chaser. Tonight I'll drop in and check the bearing clearance and continue some cyl head work.

In the last class I made a special tool for cutting the seat. This tool goes into the valve guide and is bolted to the head. This is a guide for the cutting tool to make sure the cutter is concentric.

Lathe

Cutting...

Just about finished

Last night in class, I counterbored the valve seat after getting spring and a washer to help with the boring job. The spring kept the cutter off the work until I was ready other wise it would have been a problem. Then, the instructor hammered the new seat in place using the proper tool. This thing looks good and after a skim cut on the head surfacing lathe, I should be ready for construction, ie crank, pistons, bearings, seals, chain and guides.

Things are progressing. I have a machine shop class during the summer semester so that I can finish my engine.

I'll post some cell phone pics soon.
