While you do this flow test, you also want to look at the rear of the injection pump ..you will see a "T" dip-stick handle.

Whoops.. Ok will do. Back to work tommorow , so it may be some time.

Wink Nice car !

I think it is a merc colour called sage green - I may have your car's bigger (V8) brother in the same hue, it's in the gallery. Nice to see another UK based owner too, though I'm up in Scotland. Hope you get it sorted soon.

cheers

Is this the filter?

On the rear of the pump, there is an air intake filter. This allows additional air for warm-up fuel enrichment. Take a piece of vac/fuel hose and put one end at the filter and the other end to your ear. As the car warms up , you will hear the intake air at this filter, but once coolant temp is reached, there should no longer be ANY air heard. The device that controls this procedure is the Warn Running Device. [ WRD].
You will note that there are two water coolant hoses hooked to this WRD.
Inside that cap is a thermo bulb that extends as the coolant temp heats up, and that cuts the aux air OFF at temp...the problem with them is they get full of crap from sitting and stick open, causing your poor running condition when warm, but fine when cold. You can take the screws off the can and clean up the bulb and air slide and re-assemble . The test will again be the hose/air trick to see if it now works. If NO air is heard from the fiter when cold, then you could also have a plugged filter, which can also be removed and cleaned.
Check the oil level in the pump as I posted before you are very sorry................
Update.

I checked the oil level and it is above the max indicator by about 5mm, cleaned and checked a few times. It does not appear to smell of petrol but it is a petrol colour. I have posted a pic of what i think you want me to look at. Please confirm.

Took her out about 5 days ago and she was sweet, ran very well. 80 mph on the motoway with no stutters. Ran her only for about 10 mins on motorway.

Took her out again two days ago and she was fine for about 15 mins doing about 60/70 mph and it all stated again. Stuttering and loosing power. Spent the next 15 mins just about managing 40 and just got to my destination. Left her for about an hour before i set off home, stayed on the small roads this time. No problems.

I took the cooling water thermostat out (in pic) and it was clean inside. Not sure if this is the WRD you are talking about. I give it a rub over and tested it under hot/cold water. It pushed the rod out under hot and did nothing under cold. I presume this is normal, it was stiff when i first removed it and since i put it back the car is idaling slower and stalling.

I am going to try and post a vid on U-tube. WILL POST LINK IF IT WORKS.

Thanks Paul

OK

Re-do the flow test after the complaint is evident again..there is a Swirl Pot in the tank that has a fuel fill hole in the bottom that gets plugged..the symptom is poor running/flow until the car sits for a while. That time allows the pot to refill.
This will show up with another flow test at the time of the poor running.....

Here is a previous post discussion that shows how the MFI tank pick-up system works....starting at Post #12 will explain it in detail.

I need to continue this thread

I know its been awhile but i still have not got to the bottom of this problem. Today i removed the fuel tank and it is clean from what i can tell. I removed the fuel gauge, drain plug and emptyed it and blew down the two pipes (in and out) the tank is silver inside with no signs of rust. Very little debry came out, just bits of black (about a tea spoon full). I removed the pump (looks its age) no signs of any problems. The warped diaphram is still fitted to my car (see opening pic) i removed and plated about with it again as i did the

'The most probable cause is the Heat feeler sensor device is sticking open from non-use'

I had another look at this, took it out and put it back. Seems ok. I am right in thinking this is the one above the oil filler cap on the injection manifold (battery side) ??

So now the car runs worse than before i messed. I have not dont a fuel flow test when the car is at fault yet, i will do tommorow. Please could you help me with this.

Paul
