Question regarding EBay car?

I love the car and the color combo. What would I do about the dash cracks? Could I even find a red one and what is the install process like?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&_trkparms=tab%3DWatching&viewitem=&item=190163085257&_trksid=p3907.m32#ebayphotohosting

Best and Thanks,

David

What a beauty!

That's some nice-looking ride alright. I looked for the crack you mentioned, but didn't see it. How about a dash mat?

Good luck. MB coupes are all terrific looking cars.

I think he's referring to the delamination occurring above the gauges area. Once that foam goes there isn't much you can do but replace the dash.

The gauge cluster housing is a separate part that you can remove and replace independent of the foam cushion pads on the dash. Biggest hasle is is getting the temp gauge line out in one piece.

Foam pads are also independent parts but a bit of a pain to get out.

You can get the dash redone - there's lots of pros out there who can make it look as good as new.

Is it me, or does that trunk look very off-kilter?

What would it cost do have a pro re-do that dash? And yes, the trunk does look of kilter a bit. I am so tired of the Europeans scoffing up all of our cars due to the incredible strength of the Euro. I spend $10k and they spend $6k at the current conversion.

Thanks Fellas,

David

The bright side is that most Europeans have to fork out another 19% in tax on the purchase price before they can get it into their drive way.

Am I better off waiting for a 280 coupe or bumping my budget up to a 3.5 Coupe?

Buy the best you can afford - only you know your financial situation and what you intend to do with the car. Make sure you put your eyes on any car you buy prior to paying for it, and also make sure you know what you're buying.

I agree with POS. Also check what 250 coupes are going for. This one looks nice original, but may be getting up there given that carpet is a bit faded, cracks on dash, and rusted bumper. These are not serious, but it is indicative that the nice white shiny body work perhaps might be a repaint that is hiding something. Could be nothing, but the car is from MA and over 40 years old after all. My coupe came from MA and it sure had plenty of rust.

It all depends what you want to use the car for and your personal tastes.

The Euro isn't so much strong as the dollar is weak, against virtually all other floating currencies. BTW, they are not spending $6k, they are spending about 7k Euros, which is equivelent to $10k, which is the same you are paying. Plus they have to pay inland and overseas freight, import duties, and then inland freight again. They are paying what they pay because they have an appreciation of the cars, something Americans don't seem to have much of these days, other than muscle cars. This is just good old international trade - nothing really to be sore about.

Wouldnt suprise me if somebody overseas buys this coupe and repatriates it at Germany. Regarding the binnacle cracks (dash looks perfect) I'd ask myself if retro-upgrade for 1965 wood binnacle is possible. Might be hard matching striped walnut though.

That's been going on for quite awhile, and it is not only because of the Euro either.

The fact is, that the USA has a LOT more of these old cars around than in Germany, where so many rusted out or failed the strict TuV inspection and were junked.

About 8 years ago, in fact, I bought some ebay stuff from a German guy called Sven in Berlin, and mentioned I was looking for a "Warndreicke" Trunk Triangle and clip.

He went to a junkyard in Berlin and got 2 or 3, which I sent to friends here in shape, the USA, and he brought them to Mississippi and mailed them to me when he came to the USA on vacation soon after that.

One reason for the trip was to buy and ship home a pale yellow, 1962 Mercedes Benz 220SEb cabriolet that was in Texas in perfect condition, but with a blown engine.

He got it for a great price, and he said he would be rebuilding the engine in Germany, and giving it to his father for a present.

He specifically mentioned it was well worth the price, for one in that good a shape; a bargain EVEN WITH the expenses of exportation, shipping and customs and everthing else. Cars like that were VERY hard to find.

Yep, on this forum we've had buncha USA export pirates. Norwegian guy imported 108 4.5, said there's nothin like it over there, went nuts when the car arrived. Dutchman asked particulars on export from Port Savanna GA. Portugese fellow surfed the American market for 115's.

I'd like to work an arrangement with them myself, bein a picker and buyer for export quality vehicles. Makes my blood run cold seein em undriven here.

There are several people who recover dashes. Just do a search on the web. The price I got for my 560SL was ~1000.00.
