found for sale: 450SLC AMG racecar

http://www.anamera.com/en/detail/car/13785/index.html?no_cache=1&tx_anamerashowroom_pi1%5Bpointer%5D=8-14&tx_anamerashowroom_pi1%5BMODE%5D=make&tx_anamerashowroom_pi1%5BRET%5D=63

1980 450SLC 5.0 AMG racecar... That's one of the meanest-looking racecars I've ever seen. FIA papers included and ETCC and Le Mans history.

So, is this an official works/amg car or a car built for individual? Either way, $199,000 is a bit out of my reach

I once saw an official works 1950s LeMans MGA coupe sitting in a shed, but the guy knew exactly what he had (in addition to T34 tank engines and restoring a Spitfire - the WW2 airplane, NOT the car). Amazing what is still out there to be owned...

Nice link. I liked the Gullwing too,

Bert

It might be a bit out of your reach Bert. But it's a LOT out of my reach.
That would be one very cool car to own, though. Not sure I ever liked the headlights. Kinda makes it look BMWish I reckon............

Daimler didn't Buy AMG until 1992,So EVERY AMG racer ,and this was the first race car built by AMG since the McLaren M6 debacle of the early 70's, Is a 'Works' car.It was one of Two.Daimler AG has the other on display in the new museum.

If I was a vintage racer, I'd be all over it. Primarily because you rarely get to see Mercedes at those races. Oh, and if I had the money (not close yet), I'd be all over it.

Exactly. I'm sure you'd get a lot of invites to participate in some prestigious events. And the FIA eligibility is a great passport to have for overseas races. I think you'd really have to race it in Europe to get the most out of owning it. Unless you just wanted to annoy your neighbors by taking it for milk

I didn't notice this until now, the car has an automatic transmission? It's listed in the details and shown in the photographs. I wonder if it has to stay that way for authenticity. But I'm surprised to see the car built with an automatic in the first place - maybe MB didn't have a suitable manual in that era but I would think the FIA would have allowed a substitute.

I thought that the first AMG race car was a late sixties or early seventies 300SEL 6.3 (seriously modified).

I said,"since the Mclaren M6 debacle..." .What happened was,Mclaren sold AMG a M6B ( you can see a good pic of it on their website) to be raced in the German equivalent of Can Am. It was powered with a M-100 6.8 liter engine.

It produced so much power that the dyno couldn't handle it because of tire slip.
Unfortunately AMG got into financial strife and owed over 200,000 DM's. That was the very last race car they built or were involved with until that W107 car many years later. It would be another very long time before another car was to be built after that, in fact.

In the meantime,Bruce Mclaren had ordered a new Mercedes 300SEL 6.3 but tragically died before it was delivered ( the car is in his native New Zealand after Bernie Eccleston,Ron Dennis ,Chris Amon and others had used it) .The parts AMG were using for the race car were given to McLaren Race cars in lieu of payment and were loaded into a container. They also went to New Zealand ,but over the years that container has been lost.
AMG survived by doing tuning work for private customers until 1992 when Daimler Benz took control.

AMG's first work Was competiton cars,in 1965,a long time before the Spa car was thought of .The first race winning 108 was this car.a 280 SEL

After the mampe car,the next race was this in 1986 almost 8 years later although a W126 500SEC racer was built but never driven.(I have pic of that too,in it's storage place in Alfalterbach.)

Wow, excellent synopsis. Do you have a website that I can read? Or can you recommend a book telling more of their story?

AMG history is rare,I know most of what I know from people who either worked for AMG in those days ( all are retired now) or people such as the past owners of the Bruce Mclaren Car. It's AMG's 40th Anniversary this year ( commemorating the founding of the company in the old Mill ,in the back ground of the race car pic ) .Unfortunately modern AMG owners don't share much of the passion for the early cars like vintage Merc enthusiasts do .A good example was the AMG book Published last year. It's more at home on a coffee table than being used as reference work. Have look here in their heritage section for some quick movies of the 6.8 racer and others.
