Is the trans on the W115 220D the same as the 4 speed transmissions used on the 240D?

And can it swap into a W123 300D?

Clarification: I mean the stick shift.

What year is the 123?

Late 123's used a gearbox that had the bellhousing "built-in" to the main unit - ie. it was one single casting. Slave cylinders were different as well.

A bunch. Gotta be more specific about what your intent and expectations are.

My intent is to remove it and sell it in the parts section. I need to know what models it will work with so i can write a proper post about it. i already have a thread in which i am parting out this car however i have no idea what cars this trans will work with. i see quite a demand for these stick transmissions though so i was thinking about starting a seperate thread about it with details.

Simple. Advertize the gearbox as such. Just tell it like it is - that it was originally installed in a 115 220D. Any takers will know what they're after.

A broad generalization....

Cars with swing axles have a different trans than cars with trailing arms. Early trans has internal shift linkage.

Cars with 5 link rears have a different trans. Engines have a tilt to the right, so the bellhousing bolt pattern is different.

Cars with inline engines have different bolt pattern than V-8s. Bellhousing different. V-8s also have larger differential.

Some nuances, such as late euro W123 with M102 engines, which have the later bolt pattern, for example. can complicate things.

Also, the different engine families will locate the plane of the block/bellhousing at different distances from the axle. You need not only the trans, but also the specific driveshaft, rear crossmember and shift linkages to affect a swap. Clutch packs will also vary by engine.....

Jim
