Transmission part numbers - '71 and '72 250's
Part number on my '72 250 is 114 270 14 01 and the part number on the '71 is 114 270 01 01. Any significant differences between the two and will they interchange? They look the same.
ryan Are these transmissions 722.1x?

For '71 and '72, the 250 automatic was a 722.204 K4C025
The first number you mention refers to a factory reconditioned transmission. The latter would be original to that car. |

Thanks Adenauer,
The first number - off the '72 250 - was a number etched into the side of the transmission, just above the pan on the passenger side. The second number off the '71 came from a plate located just above the drain plug on the pan. I guess then, they are the same transmission??? How do/did you know that one was reconditioned? ryan

They should be interchangeable.
There are an overwhelming number of very important; valuable resources available online right here via this froum. The answers are out there. A favorite grad school professor once said, "You figure it out. The data is there. I don't want to see you again until you are convinced you have the data. It was three semesters later that I saw her. It's not about the data. It's about the ability to conduct research - to extrapolate and synthecize meaningful and relevent information from a variety of sources and to be a good consumer of that information. |

Interesting! As a college professor - it's always about the data. I don't care how thorough you are in the research process - bad data equals bad research. Unfortunately, students etc. believe that everything on the internet and even in "professional" journals is good, 'valid data'. My experience is that many things we take for truth/facts are - to quote you, "out there".
While I very much enjoy this site, I would not say that everything is valid! Nor would I say that one source is ever the definitive source. Back on the topic at hand - I have never seen info regarding reconditioned transmission part numbers, but I do know this - Mercedes has changed part numbers over the years and it is difficult to track all of these. I was just curious as to your source... ryan

Correct. It is all about the hard data. Absolutely without question. What I meant to get at was that in the quest for an answer, it seems there is a general lack of willingness - in general, to at least identify what resources are "out there" and too, to learn through discovery rather than simply pose a query and hope for an answer. Not indicating that the latter would have been your approach one way or the other.
It is about the data. But for me, the ability to conduct research that yields meaningful data is what I was getting at. To cite the source, as I frequently do here... http://www.detali.ru/cat/oem_mb2.asp?TP=1&F=114011&M=130%2E923&GA=722%2E104204&GM=716%2E002++++++++++++++717%2E000&L=760%2E101++++++++++++++765%2E700&CT=F&cat=028&SID=27&SGR=001&SGN=01 See footnote *697. The number is not exact and a call to a buddy of mine more familiar than I confirmed your first number as such. I was floored when a poly-sci major made it to graduation in undergrad. With all seriousness, he once asked in his last semester..."Can you tell me how to save this document to a floppy disc." That says it all for me. I hope this reply made better sense. |
