Unhappy 1970 250c. fuel issue! WIERD!

Hello hello.im new here, and new to the world of vintage mercedes. I recently was given a 1970 250c in fairly good shape, minimal rust, interior in good shape, 260 000km, all service records since 1985. i tried to start it and it cranks ovrer and sounds decent cranking over... but it wont fire up. after some simple diagnostics i came to find no fuel was reaching the carbs... so i pulled of the fuel line going to the carbs after the pump and put the hose into a jar... no fuel would come out when i cranked it over. i figured the fuel pump was gone(cause its a diaphram and the car had been sitting a while could result in the pump failing).. i went out and bought a electric pump flowing about 3.5psi. i went to where the fuel line enters the tank and disconnected the line expecting to have abunch of fuel pour all over the place(yes i took proper safety procations... i made sure my cigarette was in my mouth and not in my hand..).. well no fuel came out.... i double checked i disconnected the correct line by stickin cleanex in one end and blowing compressed air in the other, the cleanex flew out.. and i had indeed disconnected the correct line that had been going to the pump. so i was confused. i figured i'd disconnect the line the was directly verticle to the one i had previously disconnected thinking that line was just the return back to the tank. well i disconnected that line and fuel poured all over the place.... now even more confused. why would the line i disconnected from the fuel pump not allow any fuel to come out... but when the return to the tank was disconnected the fuel came everywhere out of the tank. by the sounds of things i had it backwards. but why would the fuel pump have been hooked up to the return line to the tank? am i missing something here? deos it sound like i have been drinking? i have to drop the tank anyways cause i found little rust flakes and green gas when it spilled out so i can check if something is blocking the feeder in the tank but i wanted to know basicly if anyone had a diagram of the fuel system layout.. my shop manual doesnt have anything usefull(surprisingly), or maybe someone can tell me if indeed, the lower hose that connect to the tank should indeed go to the fuel pump... or if the line that is a 1/2" above the lower one actually needs to be going to the fuel pump. any help would be AWSOME!!

Can I suggest you use paragraphs when you post in the future? It was getting a little hard to follow your ramblings.

Anyway, welcome to the forum.

It sounds like the strainer inside the tank is plugged so badly that fuel won't come out, but the return line is clear. You need a giant hex bit to unscrew the strainer, and there are several posts on this forum on how to make one.

The other place that clogs is the metal tube leading to the strainer, to which the hose connects.

also when you take out that strainer you will find two lines one for out one for return, oftent they get clogged up at the strainer area in the tank. Hoses have to come off and blowe compressed air to clean them out. This is one messy job, get rid of most of the gas prior to pulling plug and for gosh sakes ...put out the cigarette
