How to Get That Nice Door Slam Sound
My driver's door doesn't have that nice "kechunck" when I close it. Is there an adjustment that I can do? It sounds like it's hitting something first by the lock mechanism or the latch.
Thanks, bigmaq

Door checks
I replaced one and have one other door check too install on my rear doors. I think we are talking about the same thing. I call them door stops. Three bolts, pop the pin from the door frame on the hinge side and your good to go. (OFF COURSE YOU HAVE TO REMOVE THE INTERIOR DOOR SKIN TO GET TO THEM) Made a world of difference on how my doors slam and sound.

I had to comment on this thread. I was at a car show and I was showing my 450. A gentleman came up and wanted me to open and close the door so he could "hear" it for himself, that unmistakeable MB door closure. He had me repeat it several times. He was quite impressed with something I have learned to take for granted

When I shut my doors, I'm hearing a hollow, metalic sound rather then that "ka-chunk" one expects from an MB. I'm wondering if there is supposed to be some type of sound-deadening material inside the door. My door seals look like they're okay. If nothing else, I will put some Dynamat in them.

On our SD, I have replaced the door seals and the striker. Still don't have the vault like sound. I am thinking the guts of the door, glass etc is the issue, but would love to get that sound.

How about not "slamming" your doors in the first place?
I *hate* it when people slam doors on a Benz. Check the door strikers for proper alignment and/or wear. Also check all the other bits everyone else suggested so far.

I have to tell most people riding in my car that slamming MBZ doors is not necessary. It seems that most non-MBZ folks are too used to cheap Japanese & American cars. It's truly a pity.

I hate that, too. Benz, or anything else. A lot of people sound like they're trying to destroy the door when they get out.

It's a 116 problem, crummy door catches. On mine it takes brute force yanking the handle to open driver's door from outside. Ultimate best were 111 220Sb doors with old style push button release. Rehanging 111 door is murder though if you need to replace one. 3 of us spent all afternoon on one and never got it set completely perfect.

hey Dog, you back? Hope you are well
Trying to get the flair out of my 72 SL between 2-3rd gear. On the old diesel I just fiddled with the modulator, not even sure this has one

I miss my 58 ponton rust bucket. In its deplorable shape, those doors had a perfect sound. I don't think I've ever heard a W126 make it the same way. Close, but not quite. The W201 certainly doesn't. -CTH

Another gift from my parts car, interior door catches : ) I found mine had died because the door wouldn't lock anymore.
My 3 bolts on the parts car were stubborn. Required liquid wrench and some tapping with a hammer on the screwdriver. I had to go away and come back too. This may be an issue if you are junkyarding for them. Still, success here in the personal junkyard and interior door catch successfully transplanted. And can you slam the doors on a 1980? Are they slamable? They are very light on my 1972 and if you slam them once, I'll politely ask you not to. Slam them again, and you have to walk. Ann

I had the same problem. The driver's door was sticking and it was hard to open and close. I took the lock and striker pin out and cleaned up as best I could. There was lots of dirt and grim. I lubed all of the moving parts and reinstalled. I also took the sticker plate. It took a impact hammer to get the bolts off. I readjusted everything. It took several tries to line up the plate with the pin. Now everything works and sounds smoothly. Almost like new.
Since I everything was off I also polished and sprayed on a clear coat. I'm going to do this to the other three doors. All took was little time and patience.
