I worked for MB as a detail man from 1975-77. The pinstripes were NOT applied by the factory. However, the dealer had nearly EVERY car pinstriped, as stripes were a major selling point in the 1970s. I'd leave them on, as pinstripes are a very period look.

The metal plate you showed was given to the owner so when he went in for service the service advisor didn't have to write down all of the information each time (before computers) so they would run the plate under a roller with the service order sandwiched in to carbon copy the information...how do I know this? I remember our '74 had this plate...it was sent to us from M-B shortly after our purchase of the car new.

There is a little pocket in the owner's manual pouch which holds it.

A peculiarly American phenomenon I think. I don't think you'll find many Mercedes with them in other countries. They may be period but I think they're hideous. The cars have accent lines designed into the bodies as is and they don't need fashion statements stuck onto them as well. At least that's my opinion for what it's worth.

In England, they call them go faster stripes. I'm sure it's a pun.

I hear you. But this IS America (at least for some of us). And if you want a retro look for a retro MB, go for the pinstripes (no slashes or sigs), 1/2-inch pinstripes, Armor All trim, sheepskin seat covers and cocoa matts, because that's how many an MB rolled out of the showroom in the 1970s.

Me, I could do without these goodies, especially the Armor All.

Combination of things - A business venture as presented itself and i need to gather up as much money as i can within the next month or so. I also will be out of the country for a couple months, and just dont have the time to be doing anything with this car. I want to see it go to someone that will cherish her, and not just sit in my garage and collect dust.

But what it comes down to is i dont need it.

Joey
