W114 floor pan covering?

As part of the rust remediation process, I had to remove the covering on the interior floor pans of my 1972 250C. Does anyone know what the material is? It chipped off easily, so I don't think it was an asphalt coating.

Any recommendations on what to replace it with?

It was originally some type of PVC. I haven't found anything yet to exactly replicate it but I have used a couple of different methods.

The first thing you have to do is to repair the rust damage, clean the surface rust and seal it. I suggest POR-15 for the sealing.

The best results I have achieved used a combination of tar paper and rubberized undercoating. I cut tar paper into shape, sprayed the coating on the floor boards, placed the paper on the coating and worked it down using an old iron to fit it into place. Let it set for a week and then spray it again. It takes about a week for the stuff to properly dry.

It's a nasty, smelly, messy bit of business and I gotta REALLY like the car! It works pretty good and it takes care of all the road noise.

There has to be a better way but I haven't found any products which don't cost an arm and a leg. I tried the spray foam but it didn't hold up and was a total pain to try and keep even.

On your 250C, take a good look at the rear receiving socket of the front subframe mount. Every 250C I've been involved with which has the floorboard rust in the front corner has needed repair on the sockets.
