Intermittent blower fan on 73' w114 (280)
For awhile the fan didn't work... ended up replacing every single fuse I could get my hands on and it worked perfectly for a day. Now it doesn't turn on at all, fuses are still fine. It has A/C but the compressor is on the workbench right now (whole different project, that). Doesn't look like it's clogged up with leaves or anything. When I move the switch, I don't hear a thing. Any ideas?

Two things to check.
First the fan crossover switch under the dash just above the acc. pedal. It is vacuum operated and is controlled by the A/C compressor control knob on the center console. Second, check the fan connection on the firewall (inboard of the heater valves) to see if you are getting power to the fan. Positive is the lower connector nearest the starter. Varying speeds are controlled by ground/earth to the other three terminals. I use the battery from my cordless drill when testing the motor itself at those terminals to prevent a shorted motor from blowing fuses or switches. |

Which fan? Does the other one work when you turn the A/C switch fully CW or fully CCW? Jim

Oh yeah, I guess I should have made my instructions more specific. The firewall connector I referred to is for the defrost/heater fan not the cabin recycle fan mounted in the center console used for the A/C.
Thanks Jim. |
