That is not a wire , it is a hollow tube [ Capillary Tube] that has [ had ] a charge in it .The gauge is a mechanical one....must be replaced.

Repair might be possible by replacing the sender and capillary tube, dissassenleing the gauge and grafting it in. Not practical but depending on the specific gauge design, possible. It would be expesive if one had to pay for the labor.

I would go over to the 121 Forum { 190SL ].. I am sure someone there will have one.
You can just change the cap tube assembly, but then you have to calibrate the gauge.

Jim Villers or Bill Streep run that one and they are both memebers here..do a search

Talk to Tom Hanson at the MB Classic Center. I do not have the 800 number, but the local number, (Irvine California), is 949-598-4842.

Awhile back, there was a repair procedure for mechanical temp guages posted here, from of all places, a Vintage Chrysler-Plymouth site. Try a search.

Happy Motoring, Mark

Do you have a picture of the gauge? I have 3 of them from different vintages (two from 50s?), it might be the same?
