Hello, I just found this thread and thought I would try to bring it back to life again. I have a 1971 280SE with inline six. I bought this for my wife over a year ago with a blown headgasket. I plan on replacing the gasket, valve seals and timing related items in the next few months. I am in Hawthorne CA.

Was there a gathering organized? Maybe we can start one. Come on! Lets plan for it for Xmas or maybe starting next year.

I'd love a get together. If there aren't many W108 folk, we could always park near the Bob's Big Boy in Burbank/Silverlake which has an ongoing Friday night old car show in its parking lot. I have a 72 4.5 280SE.

Shades, Ive been through that repair a few times, even while living in Redondo Beach. if you have not done this you may need some guidance regarding all the potential problems which come up during the work. Are you going to do it yourself?

That may be a good place to meet. Lets see how many more are interested. Also, there is a parking lot in Torrance (Home Depot). There are clubs that meet there first friday each month.

Yes, I plan on doing this myself. At this point, I have no idea what it entails. I have yet to find a good manual to help me get started. Do you have a 280Se (straight six) as well? pm me..

I've been driving my 280se 4.5 more since my Infiniti lease will be coming to an end. It amazes me how often I see another 280se 4.5 here in Los Angeles.

I wonder how many of us owners are out here. How many lurk here on this site?

It would be nice to get some sort of group going here in Los Angeles. At the very least a list of owners would be great.

Incidentally, I also saw my first 500e this morning, driving south on the 405 coming from santa clarita.

If you guys have any battery box brackets or parts laying around for the battery mount that you want to sell, let me know. I have a 1970 280SE 108 that I rescued from a high school shop class and I need the top attaching parts for the battery. I'm in IL.

By the way for all vintage car owners. Costco wholesale will not install tires unless you provide them with lug bolt torque specs. The dealers cannot provide you this information. They have nothing on paper that detail the spec on the lug bolt. Costco will only accept a copy of a work manual or service manual that indicates this info. I spoke to MBUSA and they were able to fax me a copy of the torque spec on a lug bolt with no specific info to which year it belonged to. I wrote an email to MBUSA requesting the information on a 1979 300SD and a 1970 280 SEL. They replied providing me the lug bolt torque specs in newton meters. All this was going on while I was aslo communicating with Coscto. Employees and managers at Coscto had no clue on how to resolve my issue until I wrote to Costco. Two days later I received a call from the area supervisor of the Costco tire centers in the Los Angeles area and stated the the lug bolt torque spec for my vehicles was 81 lbs. Very nice and professional guy. If anyone has a problem getting tires at Costco please email me at xaliscomex@yahoo.com. My name is Gil. You can't beat Costco prices. I am currently talking with Brian about getting Costco to carry white walls.

I have a shop in Carson not too far from you, I just got a '70 280 SE 2.8 from a relative, it was sitting for 20+ years and it looks like (most likely)the head gasket leaked coolant into the cylinder, so it's seized up pretty bad. I am going to drop in a non-mb motor and trans in it, so let me know if you need any of the engine or trans-related parts. They are all in excellent condition other than the aforementioned problem.

I agree with the previous post that you will need to be somewhat mechanically experienced to do this job, but if so, it's fairly straightforward. These cars are very well engineered, especially for their day, and as long as you don't have corrosion issues you should be able to get everything apart pretty readily. Not sure how much help I can be without bringing in that car as a regular job here, but let me know I'll see what I can do.

We primarily servie Lexus vehicles, and it is completely true that Toyota back-engineered benz when designing the Lexus cars. Amazing design and build quality, especially since it was 40+ years ago!

southern california meet

Wow! I had forgotten about this thread that I started. Sadly, I am still looking for a replacement head for my 1971 280SE. I have gotten quotes as high as $1100 but I am certain I can find one for around $200. ..just got to keep looking.

Lets do the meet anyway. If anyone is interested. It doesnt have to be a dozen cars.
