1957 219 what is it worth

Hi folks
I have been offered a 1957 219 6 cylinder for 1K not running. its all there, some small rust holes on the floor pan and under the battery, otherwise it looks OK. It wasnt driven for 10 years, then they decided to restore it about 12 years back and drove it to an upholstery firm, had the inside reupholstered then on the way home the carb failed and they had it towed home and just parked it and left it. Hubby died and now his wife wants to sell it.

I have 107's and no idea of the value of a 57 219. any thoughts appreciated

They aren't worth a whole lot but they are pretty nice cars. Very rust prone though. I would try to get it for 500 (let your conscience be your guide). Fixing it so it is a fun driver makes sense, a full restoration probably does not.

Dig the roll and tuck interior! (surely NOT original).

Nice color combination.

Good luck.

Not much!

$250. would be alot for a car that doesn't move OR run! $500 is a lot!

If that car has rusted out frame rails, you've got yourself a parts car. You might have one even if the frame rails aren't rusted out. If you decide not to buy it, let us know where it is. Might be some ponton guys who would buy it to save the useful parts from going to the crusher. Check out www.mbzponton.org for a whole lot of good info.

Buy it and get it running. You'll have a blast. Never look at an old Mercedes as an investment. They are objects to admire and play with, and then pass on to another appreciative owner. $250, $500, $1000, whats the difference. You'll start spending buckets of money once you start fixing her up, but you will have a lifetime of stories to tell about it too. Thats priceless.

Thanks guys
I knew you would point me the right way. The car is in Maple Valley (40 miles outside Seattle) WA. She offered it to me for the 1K because I know them. I believe she is advertising it for 2K. (it was hubby's project and the sentimental value is great).
appreciate the advice, if the price comes down a little I might feel tempted, but i have another partially rebuilt 7 waiting for me so dont really need another big project right now
cheers

Some history

That car has been in CraigsList for the last 2 months for $1,000. If you are the first person interested, $500 sounds like the right price (if frame isn't rusty).

A 219 is a hybrid model, using the front fenders and hood from the 220S/SE cars and the 180/190 body from the cowl back. Sort of like the old W110 230 models.

Check for rust under the battery, the longitudinal frame rails, rear trailing arm mounts, and on the front sub-frame itself. The trailing arm mounts are a big deal, rust means the car is unsafe to drive.

The hood hinges tend to stick, make sure someone didn;t damage the hood trying to open and close the hood. If people aren't careful, the thin hood can twist like a pretzel.

You need to sell me the seven so you have time to work on a "real" car.

I have always wanted a seven or seven clone. I do scca autocross and would love to have one for that.

Well, I think I would....I have never even ridden in one or sat in one. At nearly 200# and only 5' 8 I might be a bit of a tight fit.

At least the 219 would be a nicer car to drive than my 4-cylinder Ponton 180b. Other faults shared by most Pontons include feeble heaters, poor brakes, and tricky swing-axle handling at the limit.
Still, I'd rather work on a Ponton than a V8 SL. If the rust is truly just a few small holes under the battery and in the floors, that car might be worth it. If the rust has spread to portions of the frame rails and trailing-arm mounts, forget it.
Many years ago, I experienced a rear trailing-arm drop off a friends's rusty '60 Ponton 190b. The arm dragging on the asphalt made an awfull racket, some interesting handling, and severed a brake line as well, taking out the brakes. Fortunately, when it happened I was slowly pulling away from a traffic light, not traveling 45 mph on the G W Parkway, as I had been just 10 minutes earlier!

Happy Motoring, Mark

Thanks again guys, I discovered that it has been on craigs list so I guess I was being sold a story! I have decided to leave it alone for now and keep playing with my 107's

special for Tom I have the real thing and a clone, and i weigh more than 200# but I can squeeze into the 17 inch wide seat with no problem. its quite a rush, espcially the clone, its an 800# car (sans me) and has a 230hp motor, but boy do they take time to keep running

That SL in your photo is sweet. That would be a fun car to have.
