Changing headlight

Hello,

I just bought my first MB, it is a baby blue 1972 220D. I love the car. I bought it from some pictures on the internet and flew to Colorado to buy it. She burned a lot of oil on the way back to Austin but runs great.

So I must be an idiot, because I can not figure out how to change the headlight, much less remove it?!?! I just ordered a manual, but it will not arrive for another week. I think i have to pull the silver ring off of the outside and replace the entire bulb assembly, lens and all? I cant access the bulb from under the hood, and from underneath all I can see is a massive welded piece of steel with wires going in to it.

I am terrified to tamper with the metal ring for fear of breaking more stuff?

Any help would be much appreciated...

Thanks
Claytor

Removing Headlamp Bezel

The headlamp bezel is fixed on with one screw at the bottom side of the bezel.

Remove the screw and pivot the bezel upward while being careful about pulling the top side away from the top of the fender with your fingers. There is a spring steel hook at the top of the bezel that hooks into a piece on the top of the fender. If you're not careful, you can scratch/chip the paint on the top /front edge of the fender with the bezel.

The wiring harness to the parking/signal light doesn't give you a lot of slack, and the light 'box' has to clear the bottom of the headlamp as well.

Once you get the bezel off, you will see that the headlamp is held in with a ring that is fixed with three machine screws to the headlight adjustment assy.

Take the ring off, remove & replace the headlamp; put the ring back on & put the bezel back on with the same care as when you took it off to avoid scratching the paint.
