I highly recommend getting yourself a copy of Hemmings Motor News, http://www.hemmings.com, available at any bookstore. There are always advertisements for used parts dealers as well as private sellers. Some dealers specialize in pre-1970's cars. You might also try the sponsers of this web site (Buy Parts tab). They have access to used parts as well. And a search on the web for "Mercedes-Benz used parts" comes up with many hits.
Bought most of my used parts from pull it yourself yards the last few years, but when I have bought them elsewhere it has either been Ebay (last resort these days, price and look around first), one part from this site last year, and I think I bought something from Potomac German Auto a long long time ago. Of course, these models are not very common in the pull it yourself yards or most modern yards, so the Mercedes/classic car yards are your best bet. |

You realize....
to remove the unit, takes the agility of a elephant, and the patience of a two-humped dromedary (Not).
It is as far under the Dash as anyone could reach ! I would investigate the frozen components, and with plenty of Liqiud Wrench, and patience, you'll probably fix it.

Having been there done it with my 111 coupe, here is how I would proceed:
Step 1: Take the wiper off and put a short tight fitting rubber hose over the driver side wiper stud (outside of course). Pour in liberal amounts of liquid wrench in hose, let stand, and do this for a couple of days. Step 2: Disconnect wiper assembly from motor, put a double nut on shaft and try to turn with wrench. Repeat step 1 and 2 for a couple of days. Step 3: If still stuck after a couple of days, remove circlip from shaft, put a nut on the shaft and give it some good hard blows with a hammer (nut is needed to protect the thread of shaft). The shaft is supposed to slide in its housing and by hitting it on the outside you are basically disassembling it. Try step 2 again (idea is to break the rust bond with the hammer impact) Of course, be careful not to hit bodywork or glass or fingers. Step 4: If all above has failed, crawl under dash, take radio, heater box out. Undo hardplastic vents behind dash. Passenger side is easy to remove. Driver side is a pain the rear. I actually undid a couple of the staples and split the vent partially into its two halves just enough to be able to bend and deform the vent a bit to wiggle it out from back off the dash (after you take speedo and tach out). Now you can remove the bolts for the wiper assembly (actually, those are not the problem. The problem is that the wiper assembly cannot be fully pulled out because the vents are in the way). Step 5: Take wiper assembly to vice, clamp it, and put a wrench/lever on it and repeat step 2 and/or 3. Mine came loose after some really hard blows with a big hammer, and was dry as a bone with rust all over it. Step 6: Grease up and reassemble. On my assembly, I cut the long bar into two small pieces so it is less rigid and I have more play in the assembly for removal without taking the driver side vent out the next time this happens. Removal is a pain, but not impossible. Vent removal/wiggling is the biggest hassle. I did not want to take pedal assembly and steering out (way too complicated in my car). Steps 1 through 3 may be enough though. Good luck, Bert

thank you. Much appreciated. I had envisioned something like that. The car is my sons. And of course he wants to do the wrenching. So he broke the top of the stem off while attempting to beak it loose. Judgment is a hard won attribute. We all have to FU a few times. Fixable if it can be freed up. I intend to follow your procedure as it makes sense.
The car is located 2+ hrs from where I live. So now that is drivable [given good weather] I will bring it up here and do the hose and penetrant thing for a few days. Then go from there. I also found a local MB shop with a bunch of parts cars nearby. I plan to check them out in the next few days. Thanks again...George |

In my case penetrant did not do much either. Sounds yours looks like mine was. Dry as a bone and fully rusted together over the length of the shaft. Drilling a hole may not work either in that case because the penetrant just cannot creap and the rust cannot get out. Best way is to take it all out and disassemble it on the bench, clean it with some fine sandpaper, and put some serious grease in it. I had mine moving a bit when it was still in the car, but the wiper engine still could not get it around.
