self-canceling signals are not

For some reason that is beyond me my self-canceling turn signals are not canceling or, sometimes with the right turns canceling too soon. I haven't the faintest idea as to how these work but I imagine that some very simple device is out of alignment. Is it easy to get to? Is it maybe broken?

I've been driving around for literally days with the signals flashing like an inattentive old lady and in my small town I'm starting to draw stares. Any help will be greatly appreciated as appeasing the locals and probably soon the police (they don't have anything to do and won't let anything go) is a somewhat high priority. Again, thank you all for all the help on this forum.

hmm, you have the reverse of the usual problem. The multipurpose switch has a lot of small parts like springs, pins and the like to make it work as expected. There is a metal body with two indentations that receive pins. One pin and one indentation for left signal and pair for the right. A little plastic tab is activated by turning the wheel that pushes the pins out of their indentations.

Sounds like you either have one or more springs missing/broken or that plastic tab isn't being tripped. Without haveing a good switch sitting next to your bad one, you'd probably not get this fixed. ((and the easiest fix would be to install the good switch)).

The usual problem is that the sides of the indentation wear down and the pins just roll right back out w/o the plastic tab pushing it. The fix for that is to file down the indentation a bit deeper and then it all works well again.

There are a couple of guys with parts W114/W115 cars here. They should be able to supply you with a used switch.

I have some, but not sure if they will work for you , does yours have cruise control? Wipers turn to on or with switch? I think I have both. Will look.
I did have this problem with my W107 and I pulled the rubber boot back and gave it a good spray of electric cleaner followed by WD 40. Keep rag over carpet. Seemed to cure my problem, but as CTH indicates, it usually a "no stay" problem and not the other.

I have the same problem with my W115 220D, I have not taken it apart yet. I think it is one of the reasons my dad gave me the car, it is hard to get it inspected in Texas like that. Florida no problem no inspection.

It's possible that your steering column shaft is not aligned.

Some alignment shops pop the steering wheel to center the wheel.

This causes the cancellation to be off.

There is a stupid plastic plate-on earlier models(pontons maybe),it was metal-held on two opposite sides by springs, and a pivot point...maybe a spring got loose, unscrew the 2 phillips screws,be careful not to drop any down the steering column, and have a closer look....heh, my lever had problems engaging, just filed the grooves,a dab of grease, done.

I tried fixing the one in my car, but it still did not work right.
I took the one out of my parts car.
It still did not work right, intill I lubed it up and she works good, it even self-canceled.
The picture is of the oringinal one that was very loose, hell its only 38 years old I figured I would get a couple more years out of it.

get a new one! I had to replace the combo switch on my W107 due to the same thing. There is a plastic catch that is suppose to cancel when the wheel is returned to the straight position. Mine cost me $24 shipped on e-bay. It seems to be more trouble than its worth to fix the switch over replace it. Also, if you have the cruise controal stalk attached to the switch, remove the screws ans stalk, its a separate-but-attached piece.

Thanks for all the help from everyone first of all. After I purchased the car the turn signal was having the usual problem in that it would not stay so I had to hold it, add to that the fact that the relay was broken and flashed twice as fast. I replaced the switch then and that cost me $300+. I think i'll take a crack at fixing it even though I might end up replacing it.
