280SE 4.5 spark troubleshooting - now what?
Hello, I'm trying to get spark on this 1972 280SE 4.5. I hope someone here can tell me what my next step should be. Working back, no spark from the plugs and no spark from the ignition coil wire. I replaced the coil, then both ballast resistors but I don't want to just throw parts at it. I had to cut some of the wires for the resistors and put new ring connectors on because the original screws were frozen. I did notice that one of the wires leading to the blue resistor was burned (or darker than the expected copper color). But I didn't replace it because it would mean cutting open the loom and tracing it back.
I'm learning as I go but am no expert so I appreciate the help. I'm probably in over my head but I consider this the hard part and the rest of the car will be downhill. Thanks for any help! |

Have you checked to make sure your points are opening and closing, and clean? This is commonly overlooked. As long as they open and close completely you can get dwell from there (it will start and run) and, once dwell is set you can then time it.
If your points open and close, then you need to verify the wire from the points to the ignition box isn't grounding out on anything and it's also not cut. If that's good, you probably need a new ignition box. Some people go to a Petronix or Crane setup at that point but many forum members have spare boxes. If you really want to do a thorough test before swapping the box out, take the wires off the coil and put a 12V bulb on them. You should see it flash during cranking.
