cleaning the air cleaner

Hi guys!

Since I don't have all of the proper tools to balance my carbs...(yet!).....I thought it would be a good idea to keep busy with some other odd jobs.....

The air cleaner housing is SOOOOOOOOOOOO dirty!!! I remember when I first took it off, I thought "No wonder the carbs are clogged!". Does anyone have a suggestion as to how I should go about cleaning it?? The actual filter looks pretty decent and quite new.....it's just the housing itself is way cruddy INSIDE...

Thanks...
~Christy

Get a parts-cleaning brush from an auto parts store and use it to spread carb cleaner or Gunk Engine Brite on the piece. Let it stand for 15 minutes, maybe scraping or brushing stubborn spots. Then rinse with a pressure washer or hose.

ditto Chuck, but I used Simple Green, its not as tough but its less toxic so I was able to get my wee lad to wipe and scrub it down one day when he wanted to help. It was perfect cause there was really nothing he could break on it and he had a gas!

If it is painted, please be careful with the carb cleaner, some may remove paint.

It depends if they are stuck open or closed. Open is bad, closed is not-so-bad. They fact that your carbs are hosed makes me think they are open. The best info I have found is in that Star article. There is also an ongoing discussion of this topic at mercedes-veterans.com.

Hi Chuck...

This is probably a silly question...but....is it a nightmare to get to these flaps??? I'm not so sure that I want to GO there.

And..what do you mean HOSED???
