72 280SE mixing the old with the new
I have had since I was younger a 1972 280SE with the I6 2.8L I recently sold another vehicle I had and am interested in getting this up and running again. My plans were to keep the engine original, but replacing the accesories with newer style one. i.e. power steering, alternator, starter, fuel pump, air conditioning, and wanted to upgrade the electrical to current style with newer style fuses and relays. does anyone know where I can get the specifications for these so I know what newer style I could replace them with?

You can get complete fuse upgrade kits on ebay.
You can get electronic point conversion ignition from Pertronix or Crane. You can get both alt and starter upgrades by simply replacing them with current stock..they will automatically give you the higher amp and HP starter/alt for replacement. That car has power steering and the fuel pump may have already been upgraded to the smaller pump. You may also want to add a manual CSV switch to the cabin to over-ride the Cold start system. You can also replace the DOT sealed beams with new H4's w/o wiring changes..big difference. Can also hook the Pass to Flash back up if it is DOT version. That's good for a start and all worth the trouble.

do you know who makes the electrical conversion kit?
I will look at the ignitions. For the alt and starter where would I start looking? for the power steering I was hoping to replace pump/lines/and gear box for something newer I believe mine was going out when it was running so it needs replacing either way. The fuel pump is the smaller one, and recall when it was running that I read on here that they can not be retrofitted without problem and the best thing is to clean it out replace parts. Quote:
And the H4 conversion was on my upgrade list from the beginning does anybody know a good manufacturer that sells the DOT version? Thanks for the help so far. |

I am rebuilding a 1972 250C. I am currently working on the AC system. If you elect to go to R-134a, I suggest ackits.com for a parallel flow condensor and Seltec universal compressor. Also, you will want new hoses, and for that I recommend http://www.rayeveritt.com/Parts/Hoses/Hoses.html

Great link and good advice on the A/C thorsen, thanks for posting this. How do you plan to mount that compressor to your engine? Are you using some variation of the stock 6-cyl bracket?

I checked out the fuse upgrade kits, but I was thinking of upgrading to the current blade type and rewiring the whole system. Is there someone who sells a current replacement harness for the whole car.

I don't know of anyone who makes one. Why would you want to do that?

Ideally I would like a I6 with a custom look and I want to use newer smaller accesories to showcase the engine.

Old vs new compressor and condenser.
Here are the old vs new pictures of the rotary compressor and the parallel flow condenser.

Hi,
If you want to convert to electronic ignition, i would highly recommend the XR700 from Cranes Cams. i installed t on my 71 280s about two months ago and it hasn't missed a beat. Go for it! |

because the current wiring is 36 years old and I'd feel better that my beloved benz isn't going to start on fire if it has all new wiring/connectors/ components. Since the last time it was whole and I tried to start it one of the "computers" I'll call them started to smoke behinf the driver's side headlight.
