I don't know that any 450sl's were made at all. Plenty of 350's to go around, but not the 450. Converting an automatic is easy, if you happen to have a parts car handy to get the clutch assembly, tunnel mount, drive shaft, shifter, drive shaft, flywheel, clutch, transmission and perhaps the rear end.

I punched in the part number (117 251 2501) of my V8 transmission bellhousing in the EPC. According to EPC, bellhousing was only used on the following W116 models: W116.028 & W116/029, that is 350SE and 350SEL, respectively. Not on 450 SE or SEL. Although, last year I did buy a spare manual from Potomac MB that supposedly came from a 450 SEL. Go figure...

The v8 bellhousing is unique to the cast iron blocks (3.5 & 4.5 motor). The transmission also takes more torque than it's smaller brothers. A gearbox from a 4/5/6 cylinder car will not survive very long.

The 3.5 man trans will not fit a 4.5 due to the fact the 4.5 block is taller. The transmission does not bolt directly to the engine but to the intermediate flange that fits between the engine and transmission. The intermediate flange only fits the M116 engine. There may be a way to modify it to fit but I have never heard of it.

I've driven a certain 450SLC in central Ohio that is currently running around with a 4 speed manual conversion......

Only the 3.5 V-8s had manual trans in the R107s. 280SLs with stick shift are not too unusual, though.
