Red face 280te non runner

Hi,please can someone help.
I have a 1992 280te W124 with a starting problem. The car will spin over fine and after about 10 seconds will run but will not rev above 600 rpm even with the throttle wide open.If you have it running at 600 rpm with throttle fully depressed after only approx 5 minutes the catalytic convertor gets really hot.I removed the spark plugs and the were dry.I was told it was the crank sensor and the OVP relay which I changed but this made no difference.I wondered if anybody has had a similar experience or any information which might help me solve the problem.
Many thanks to you all.
Tony

Tony, sounds like you may have a plugged exhaust.

I disconnected mine at the manifold to verufy, it it ran fine with the exhaust off.

Thanks for the reply Jim.I disconnected the exhaust down pipe and still the same problem. After about 2 hours of checking different components I was getting very strange resistance readings for the wiring loom from the ECU to the coil packs. After stripping the rubber ontop of the cam cover for the loom I found that the plastic insolation had completely deteriorated and the wires were shorting against each other.I made a new loom and connected it to the main engine loom and the vehicle started and runs really smooth.RESULT.
