1973 450sl with m117 motor -- mystery vacuum line
Can anyone identify this vacuum line (actually i'm not even sure it's a vacuum line) for me? In the process of replacing the timing chain on my 1973 450sl with an m117 V8, I found this line (see yellow arrow in attached photos) on the front of the block more or less behind and below the alternator (passenger side). The line runs up and over the water pump, then connects to a hard line which runs down into the dark behind the engine on the driver's side. Any ideas?

I have never traced it, but believe it to be the line for the fuel tank ventilation. It's the same diameter and type of hose as the one in the trunk where the "pressure reservoir" (if that's what it's called) is located in my 4.5. It runs down the driver's frame rail towards the back with the fuel rails, so I'm 99% sure that's what it is.

yep. It goes back to the fuel tank via the vents. All part of hydrocarbon reduction. It doesn't hurt if it's broke, but it's good to keep it together. -CTH

It's strange that the line would go into the block like that.

Thanks everyone. I think I'll re-route it just for a cleaner installation.
