Question w114 250 C Title question

Hi
i like to by a car from the Us and ship the car to Germany.
The owner faxed me a copy of the title to proof he is the
owner of the car bevor i send the money.
my question is,it says on the Title
State of Ohio Title DUPLICATE
is that normal ?
any one comes from tha aera of Archbold to have a look at the car,
Here in Germany we have total different Titel so i have no idea what
it has to look like ?
thanks a lot Arne

A duplicate title usually means the owner lost the original and requested a replacement from the DMV. However, if the car was sold to a new owner who didn't register it, the last registered owner can still request a duplicate title stating that the car is still his. I would ask the seller why he has a duplicate title instead of the original.

He or you also has to turn in the title to US Customs to export the car from the US. If the title is not available (some states don't have them anymore for those old cars) you need to show other proof of ownership which can be a simple handwritten bill of sale.

Totally different question: why would you spend purchase price + $1000 shipping + 25% tax (VAT + import duty) on a 250C? Are they that rare in Germany?

Arne,

State of Ohio? No rust? W114?

This does not add up.

Any car that has spent time in Ohio, unless it came from a salt free state and then was sealed up in a garage, will be a candidate for rust.

I also own a 250C that spent 8 years in Ohio (5 as a year - round driver) and I would never make a claim that that car is "rust free".

Arne,

Duplicate title is as valid as the original.

The owner was still the owner of record at the time they requested the duplicate, the date of issue is on the duplicate title.

Risk is that potentially, there is another title (original) to the car that might nefariously get reassigned if you do not transfer yours first.

Given that you are in another country, and your title should be considered valid, it's a low risk problem for you. Plus you have possession, and we all know that's 9/10's of the law.

Jim

I would also be skeptical about the claim on no rust.

I agree. A car from Ohio with no rust? I had a 1972 250C that resided in Georgia all its live and it had rust bubbles starting to appear in the rocker corners from water being trapped. Be careful. On the other hand, you can repair a lot with a welder and some sheet metal.

I just looked at your the ebay pictures. There is rust in the last picture at the lower end of the rear fender. Seats look worn. AC will need new hoses to say the least and perhaps new compressor. Not to be a downer, but I sold my 1972 250C for less ($2500) and it was in better cosmetic condition than this ebay car. Plus it had the floor shift, foglights, working AC, plus new calipers and alternator. Try to get somebody to inspect it and poke with a screwdriver in the rockers.

I see rust in numerous photos. I would look for a better example myself. Not like the Euro is going to get weaker against the $ anytime soon.
