W123 antenna mast not going down??

I replaced the mast with a genuine MB part. I disassembled and cleaned the motor area. It runs fine up but it stops with about 7 inches remaining out when turned off. Stops in the same place every time. Is this correct or did I do something wrong? I follwed the instructions on the bag. Thanks, Paul

There are two power feed wires one is a constant (always has 12V+) and the other is when ignition circuit is on - Do you have the two reversed?

All my wiring is original and the antenna goes the proper direction for the switch positions. Radio is also original Becker Europa II so I don't think anything has been tampered with. Paul

turn radio on so antenna goes up. leave radio on but use antenna button to lower antenna will it go down all the way if so then problem is in control circuit? If not then it's binding.

try spraying some silicone spray on it. Do you have the smooth or the teeth type driven antenna mast? Also try losening the nut on bottom of mast a little.

Teethed type mast. The old one looked to be smooth. The antenna motor seems to be turning the required amount of times as I can see the rotary switch clicking. It turns for about 6 seconds. I was tempted to cut the nylon mast cable but I am afraid it won't fully extend then. Paul

The electric antenna has a mechanical timer on the winding drum. This limits the physical amount of time it runs. If there is any slippage on the drum, that antenna will not fully extend/retract.

You can get a scenario where the the antenna will not fully retract if you do not get the nylon pigtail engaged soon enough.

You really need two people to set up the antenna. Have one person in the car ready to operate the switch, and have the nylon pigtail fully pushed into the drum, so there is no slack when the motor starts the retract cycle.

You can also fool the antenna position by holding the antenna in when it starts the raise cycle.

The is also an adjustment on the motor clutch for dealing with slippage.

As a side note, I've seen both smooth and toothed cables, not sure to what effect a substitution such as you performed will affect the operation....

Jim

It's interesting you can run a toothed on one designed for smooth. Both are available still. The toothe one is the second generation I seen pictures on internet of it torn apart and it has a gear that catches the teeth and prevents slipping. I ran to same supply problem with an Ebay seller but was able to return the toothed one unused for the smooth one.

I had someone turning the motor on while I held the mast. It took it in immediately. I wonder whats up. It doesn't seem to be slipping. Paul

It's possible the two are differnt types of mast are different heights so the timer is not long enough for the height of the toothed mast. Check and see if they have same extension length.

My cousin and I held the two masts side by side and antenna tip to end of the nylon rope was the same length.

As a side note, I'm having a slight difficulty with my antenna mast blowing a fuse. I had a bent antenna and so I replaced it with just the antenna and nylon cable; got the part on ebay. Fits perfect (was a little bit of a hassle installing; the dam spring hold the nylon cable against the motor wheel is a ***** to put back), but when I reinstalled it, once I placed the antenna cable (from the radio) to its connecting part on the antenna motor housing, bam! sparks fly, fuse blows...something went wrong. I haven't had a chance to analyze it, but I think I'll be getting around to that today.

...as other have suggested, at first, I thought your nylon cable might have been misadjusted, or not coiled tight enough within the motor housing.
