280 SE Question?
Guys- I own a 75 450SE w/ 362K miles on it.
Would it be o.k. to ask a question about a 280SE that is a 1980, one yr. outside your vintage range, because I know you will know about them? I saw an '80 280SE 4 DR. for sale on the street yesterday. It was the exact same body style and color as the 75 450 SE I have. Exceptionally clean- said one owner, 73,000 orig miles and it looked as if it might be true. Asking price was maybe a little high ($3600) I know nothing at all about the 280. Probably a 6 cylinder? Does it get better gas mileage than the 4.5? (would be hard not to, right?) Any quirks or benefits I should know about? Enuff power? I would have to deal with a smog test which I luckily just escape with my '75 450. |

Is it a US or Euro spec 280SE? If it's a Euro spec car, it will have more HP then a US spec 450SEL of the same year (185hp, vs 180hp). The 280's are 6 cylinder cars and also come with a 4 speed automatic as opposed to the 3 speed in the v8 cars.
You will get a little better mileage, but not much better. If it's a US spec car, I have no idea how peppy it is, you'll have to drive it.

Assuming that it's a US car it will have a different type of injection (K-Jet) than your 450. It should also have a catalytic converter and an O2 sensor, lambda computer, and frequency valve to trim the fuel mixture.
The M110 engine gets (I think) around 170 HP in US form. That's a lot of car for a 2.8 liter engine to move around, but you should see better mileage.

If the miles and condition are correct probably somehing I'd be prepared to investigate. I owned a 79 280S. Same car but no fuel injection. You won't win any races with a US spec M110 motor but other than that I'd say it's a great car. Wonderful long distance traveller. Where are you that you don't have to smog a 75?
