Someone have Becker Europa II parts?

Hey y'all. My Becker Europa II works and is original to my '79. I want to keep it. The volume knob on the lower volumes flakes out on the right side of the car. Does anyone have a parts radio I could get a volume pot off of? If I wiggle it around it comes on so the amp is fine. Thanks, Paul

Have you tried some contact cleaner? I use a product called "de-oxit" which works really well on those dirty old potentiometers. Just spray it in and turn it back and forth vigorously.

I saw one on eBay last night that looked to be in "parts" condition. Opening bid was $5.

Used radios on ebay require you to pretty much take a flyer.

EBay speak for junk is "condition unknown", or "haven't had time to test it".

If you want to do it right, Becker will restore your radio. They are located in NYC. I had a Europa they restored, it worked quite well.

I agree with Marty's suggestion. Radio Shack used to sell "Tuner Cleaner" in a little aerosol can with a WD-40-style application tube. You might have to ask if they still carry it, though, since rotary tuners are thin on the ground anymore.

Any idea on the price-point for a Becker USA rebuild? Just curious.

I have one in "condition unknown", or "haven't had time to test it" that i'm going to throw on ebay shortly. It came in the trunk of my W108 with an alpine head unit in the dash. The bastard who put the head unit in also broke the wood in the dash.

just google Becker of North America, use the URL below or link through the audio forum and you will get all the info on Becker you need. They are located in Upper Saddle River, NJ and are very helpful. Call the restoration folks and they will price out for you anything you need as far as parts, repairs or modifications. A suggestion may be that you price out having them check your radio out and add an MP3 port/jack to the unit so you can keep the original look but play an Ipod or other device through the system. I did that with a 71 Becker Europa and it works great.

www.beckerautosound.com

hope that helps.

Becker

Get Craig's De-Oxit, and skip wd-40 and tuner cleaner.
De-oxit is expensive stuff, but it does what you need.

Becker Rebuild for europa II was around $200 a couple years back.
They can do cool stuff like add an iPOD jack too.

Mine went south, and ended up finding a better condition one at a pick and pull for $9.

My external amp went out, which has rare, hard to source transistors.
I replaced it with one off ebay I got for $5.

The radio was already done when I bought the car. I eBay'ed the radio, since I already had a mono (europa), and a stereo (europa II)

I recall it being around $100-150, with the higher price being for an electronic/cassette radio. Not sure on those numbers....

They will also install a 1/8" phono plug for you on request.

Ed Ebel is the contact, he's a Mercedes guy.

I've got a nice looking Mexico pinstripe cassette radio in my 79 280TE that's dead, I'll probably get around to having Becker refurb that one, I'd like to have a period looking radio in the 250C, and I want cassette and aux input for my Sirius satellite. Already found all the original stereo speaker housings and wiring.

Jim
