1969 280 SEL Air-fuel mixture question
Since I don't have a gas meter, what would be the best way to adjust the air-fuel mix on my 1969 280 SEL? Also, is there reliable way of testing the individual injectors?

Though there is no substitute for a C.O. Meter, you can get close by opening and closing the air mixture screw until the car "just" begins to idle rough in each direction. If the car idles smooth at the proper speed it's okay. If the idle is too high (and you are 100% sure that everything else works, warm-up circuit...etc.)when you get it to run evenly, there is too much fuel. The inverse would apply if the idle speed is too low.
You can check the injectors against one another by cracking lines loose one at a time and comparing the difference. But if you want to check spray patterns, you need an injector tester. A diesel nozzle tester will make more than enough pressure to test them, but a regular CIS tester would be outside its limits. Regards, Randy D. |
