280e difference in horsepower
I have recently bought a 1980 280e euro 4 speed and cannot figure out why is there a big difference in hp between US and Euro versions. US has 139 and Euro 182 hp. I know that my euro has has 9:1 compressiion ratio while US has 8:1. Could the low compression ratio and low octane gasoline in the US cause such a big gap in horsepower?
Thanks |

I think the euros also had a more aggressive cam to match the compression. And, yes, the cam, compression, and low restriction exhaust could give it the bump the 182.

Ignition timing affects power output very significantly too. The us version has retarded spark by comparison to reduce emissions, I think.

The difference is United States DOT EPA Consumer watch groups like Ralph Nader and the like requiring Mercedes to detune there USA exports. And let's not forget OPEC, BTW everyone else is also correct.
