Do back up lights work when shifting into reverse? Reason I'm askin is neutral safety switch is coupled with back up lights on automatic trans. Probly oughta crawl around underneath anyhow and check/clean the electric connexion. And maybe some cheap $9 rubber donuts for shift linkage arms oughta be replaced anyhow.

If it starts in neutral, the Dog's got it nailed. Your problem is linkage bushings or the switch.

Thanks guys- checked the switch and cleaned it off (there was a lot of muck crusted around it) and now it is starting fine. The bushings didn't look worn, so I'll hold off on those.
