1985 mercedes benz won't idle

Need some help on this 300 td. Runs great at highway speeds but won't idle. local garage said cylinder 5 had no fuel coming out of it when cracked, cylinders 1, 2, 3 & 4 had equal amounts of fuel coming out. Would this mean internal damage to engine? Could it be a clogged fuel line to #5, fuel pump? What do you suggest?
Already changed all the fuel filters, adjusted the valves, cleaned the banjo bolt, ran diesel purge.

Thanks for any help you can give.

I'd think it was probable trouble with the injector pump, unless you have a kinked or blocked injector line. It's pretty easy to inspect the line for a kink, so the shop shouldn't have missed it if that's the problem, but you might want to check it yourself just in case. If that checks out, pull the line off and see if it's blocked. If it isn't, it's probably time for some IP work.

You'll probably get a better response in Diesel Discussion.

If the garage got it right it has to do with the injection pump. The check valve right at the element outlet may not be functional or the element inside the pump may be shot. You might be able to do something with the check valve at home. Of course check the injection line from the pump to the injector for any obstruction such as a kink like mentioned. This is highly unlikely though. Simple check is to see if you can blow through it off the engine. Remember the walls of the tubing are thick and the fuel hole small.

You do not say in what part of the country you live. If it comes to it. In some parts there are more used pumps around than others. I think your replacement has to be a 1985 injection pump though but check that out.

Best ideal is to post over on the diesel forum. Just more specialized. People on both forums are good.
