valve adjustment on w123 gaser
I went out to adjust the valves on my 1980 280ce euro gas engine-the 110 motor and found that I need special wrenches. Anyone who can help me find those wrenches so I can do this job myself? I have looked at other sites and they offer only the diesel wrenches.

There was some on ebay awhile back. Let me see if they are still on there. You also will need .10mm and .25mm feeler gauges.

79Mercy has the correct wrench. If you can't find it, you can always take a regular 17mm open-end (thin), heat it, bend it about 40 degrees at the very end, and re-temper it (in oil). There is also a 17mm half-open, socket type available, but not easy to find and not cheap.

If you were doing this for a living that is worked in a garage I get the correct Hazet tool.
has open ends on both sides cost $58.85 plus shipping If money is no option go with the Hazet crow foot $104 plus shipping. Mercedes tools avalable at: http://www.samstagsales.com/mercedes.htm (615) 725-3388 if your doing it once a year get the Ebay wrench for $23 including shipping It's been working for those who have bought it. Not the greatest fit but it works. Last edited by cheapold280ce; 06-23-2008 at 12:58 PM. |

all i did was take a 40 year old 17mm open end and bend it on a 45 degree angle. i did it about an inch from the end and it was still able to adjust fine with the clips removed. i used a home depot torch. it can be less than 45 degrees but more than 50 or so and you wont have enough leverage.

Thanks for the help. I just ordered the wrench from ebay.Do I have to remove the clips to adjust as the haines manual has nothing about that.
Thanks Wes. |

As long as the wrench is thin enough, you don't have to remove the clips.

I went out on sunday to adjust the valves and my new wrench fit just fine
but would not budge the nuts. I then had to move the rockers out of the way and use a box end wrench on them but I got them all done and the car runs much better. Thanks for all the help.Wes |
