Thumbs down

Well, I changed the balast resistor.........still starts and dies. Everything is hooked up. It's either from the solenoid, to the ignition key, or from the key to the balast resistor now. Everything else checks out. Before I buy a new ignition switch, any other suggestions? thank you.

Go back and reread my post..

If you bring a 12 v jumper from the battery pos terminal to the ballast resistor [ not the side that goes to coil, but the side that comes from the ign sw ..the FEED side], that by-passes the ign sw and the car will run regardless of the ign sw circuit being bad..if it still stalls , your problem is more likely gas , not ignition...

Thanks Mr Dalton. When I jumper from the + bat term, to the ''input side of the balast, all I get is a "relay box" on the passenger side under the hood to click. Nothing else.

However, when I use the key to start the car, it starts, and runs, but.... I must keep the key exactly at the "start, on" position in order for it to keep running. I'm not sure what's going on, but something is fishy. I'm going to keep searching for something.
It runs, and runs well, but holding the key in the 'start/on" position is difficult for trying to drive it. Let the key fall back 1/8'' and it stops. Won't stay on the that spot. Keeps falling off of that "on" spot. Thanks again for helping.

The part you are missing is the jumper trick I mentioned does not START the car..it only lets the car continue to run after you use the key to start the car.
The jumper does not bring power to the starter..it simply brings power to the coil/spark for the engine to run after you release the key from the starter position.
When you use the key , the car starts b/c the starter circuit has a ballast by-pass circuit to the ignition, but once you release the key, the car stops. So, you start it the same way, with the key, but with the jumper wire from the battery in place at the ballast. It will then continue to run, verifying the ignition switch as faulty.
The ign switch has TWO positions and therefore, TWO sets of contacts..one is for the Starter [ crank] and one is for RUN [ spark] ..the RUN contacts set is suspect of being faulty, but you have to change the whole switch to remedy the problem.
The jumper simply by-passes the RUN section of the ign sw, it DOES NOT by-pass the starter part of the ign sw.....so you will still have to turn the key to START the car , even though you have a jumper to ballast for ignition feed...
Your confusion seems to be that you are expecting the car to turn over when you use the jumper ..it will not..that still requires the key to be turned to STARTER POSITION, regardless of the jumper...the jumper is to feed the coil for spark ONLY. It has NOTHING to do with cranking over the starter motor .
Get it ??????

NOW IT WORKS.........THANK YOU.......sorry for being so dense. I guess I have to have lots of details. The car runs jumped. So how can i keep it running until i get the switch? Jumper? I need a new switch then, is this correct? Thank you again. You are a life saver Mr Dalton.

Regards,

David K.

Like I said...Ign sw is bad.

http://catalog.worldpac.com/mercedesshop/sophio/wizard.jsp?partner=mercedesshop&clientid=catalog.mercedesshop&baseurl=http://catalog.peachparts.com/&cookieid=2EI1B4MYE2EN0PHD7Y&year=1967&make=MB&model=250-S-001&category=M&part=Ignition+Switch&appChassis=_any

You do not need the whole assembly..you just need the switching part on the back of the tumbler assembly.

In the meantime, use the jumper , but put a toggle sw in the car so you can turn it on/off.
Don't leave it On without the engine running b/c you will burn out that new Hot Spark module .

Wink

Wow, this is great. Thanks for the part too. I didn't know you sold parts. I'm learning new things everyday. I will buy the part from you. In addition, do I take out the Guage Cluster to get to the ignition? This car has air, and power windows. Here's a pic. Thanks again.
