The short rubber lines from the fuel rail to each injector are known to leak, and it's hard to see the leak unless you remove the aircleaner. Many times the leak stops after it warms up. Other areas prone to leaks are the rubber fuel lines going around, to, and from the fuel rail. Also, check the rubber lines at the fuel pump in the rear of the car next to the gas tank.
What did the shop do? What were the symptoms when you took it in?
I wonder if you are smelling a rich exhaust because the shop didn't set the mixture tight. Though this is possible, there could very well be a fuel leak.
Please be careful, they never run the same after they catch fire, I know someone who lost a real nice 280SE 4.5 because of a fuel leak.
