I'll try to decipher what I can:

115 117 10 077004:

115 is the chassis type

117 is the model, 240D

10 means you have a standard transmission

the last six digits are the serial number

***************************************

917G is the paint code, G means it left the factory with Glasurit paint

the other three digit codes are for whatever options the car came with, I'm sure someone out there can enlighten us.

****************************************

12/74 is the production date, making it a 1975 model.

Hope this helps.

The 7th and 8th digits have completely seperate designations
The 7th digit is for LHD /RHD, with LHD/1 and RHD/2
The 8th digit is Transmission digit....0/manual trans and 2/automatic.

So, that above chassis ID# is a LHD with a manual trans.............

Thanks for sharing that, it makes sense.

Speaking of RHD, I saw a RHD W112 chassis 300SE convertible today, at a old gas station turned repair shop. The poor girl was sitting on the ground was a leaky air suspension. The owner knows what it's worth, as he told me a similar model just sold for 65k and "no" it's not for sale.

On the old ponton cars with Hydrak, would it work the same way? Would "2" stand for the Hydrak clutch?

I'm just curious, as I have a 1959 manual trans W128 sedan.

No.. An early year Hydrax has a "Z" designation with the 13 digit # format ...and on the later years w/14 digits, the Hydrak would have a "1" designation where the 8th digit space is. [ same space as 0/manual and 2/auto ]

Year '59 was a designation chassis ID system change, so it depends on if one has 13/14 or 15 digit ID format.
Here is the correct info.

The hydrak would have an 11 designation, or 21 for RHD.
