m180 water pump

My replacement water pump has two unthreaded holes in it. I understand these pumps take gear oil, but how does it stay in? My old pump has these holes too, but nothing in them. Are there supposed to be plugs? How do they stay in without threads?

Todd, we need a picture. Blades of the pump that fit into the block are sealed from mechanical operational components fan-belt driven. There's small weep hole on bottom to bleed any leakage. I think the pump that included its own oil reservoir was pre-64.

Thanks Dog, yeah, it may be that this type is sealed. Shucks, I kinda liked the idea of having to check my water pump oil, automotive masochist that I am. I'll snap some photos tomorrow on my way in to work but it's basically the standard replacement pump for an m180, it is the "long" variety seen here:

I'm imagining a tiny dipstick that would have to be wiped with a tiny chamois made from a certain type of lamb. At least according to the factory manual.

Exactly! And if so, the water pump would supposedly last for six gajillion miles. Something like that would make my day.

At any rate, if my current pump was supposed to have plugs and oil in it, it certainly doesn't now! Note the cool green p.s. belt no doubt from a bygone era and probably ready to slip any day now.

Here's the neue pump with the similarly unthreaded holes at 12 and 6 o'clock. The 6 o'clock has a little raised area surrounding it.

And there's no such holes on the original pump? Maybe core of the rebuild was the primitive oil reservoir version. That banjo fitting and tube next to it on the engine picture is an oil passage BTW that leads to cyl head. I'd shoot with a little penetrating oil to prevent oxidation. It's hell if it seizes, easily broken.

No, the pump on the engine now has the same unthreaded holes, you can see the top hole in the picture directly under the bolt to the right of the crusty banjo fitting. I can see inside the hole and there is no oil in there. The original-style plugs were screw fittings weren't they? or they some kind of press-fit?
