'69 250 questions(won't start)
I have a carb kit coming, but wanting to confirm you all think this would be the problem. Car rumbles away when a little gas is poured into the carb, but won't stay running. Car had sat for 5-10 years not running, gas is getting to the carbs fine, and it has the electric fuel pump that runs as soon as the car is turned on.
Rebuild kits will be here monday, the carbs are pretty varnished up. Hoping this is it! ! |

Ebay has ''hot spark" electronic ignitions for 49. dollars. It worked on my '67 at least I know it's getting spark now. And someone said ''Laquer thinner" in the carbs to clean out the crud. If you are getting a kit to redo the carbs, it can't hurt then. I'd try it. If you get the spark, and gas flowing, it should work. Clean any wires going to ground. My neg battery terminal wasn't grounding, and I had a ''melted'' wire harness. It runs now, not perfect, yet, but it runs. Hope this helps some. Dave K.

I would start them soaking in lacquer thinner. You will need to fix the problems as they come up and there will be more. You also should drain the gas tank and have it cleaned. Also - where did the electric fuel pump come from? is it an aftermarket add on? I would get back to a mechanical pump myself.

I have some parts soaking right now in a gallon of that carb cleaner stuff, imagine it's very similar to laquer thinner.
I know it was getting spark because it runs and revs up fine when I pour gas in the intake. I know it's getting fuel to the carbs because I took the lines right off the side of the carbs and it came pouring out. I imagine it is an aftermarket fuel pump, I read that some people put them on because of an issue of gas evaporating out of the bowl if not started for a day or two? I can get the mechanical fuel pump cheap, but i know the electric one is working for now, I actually used it to drain the gas tank, got maybe 2 gallons of bad gas out. Cleaning the tank would be a good idea, yes, I know that I am getting good gas flow though. I am going to replace the fuel filter of course, it is coming with the carb rebuilds. We'll see on monday when those carb parts come. Hopefully that will fix it. |
