Doesn't take any longer to do it right.
True, though I *don't* have a 46mm crowsfoot. I'll have to think about how to get to a specified torque on that nut. Maybe I should just pick up a spring scale and measure the length of the combination wrench.

Thanks for pointing me at the intermediate bearing section of the manual, the the cross-section diagram of the bearing portion of the shaft shows this all quite well. I think I'm just going to have to print out all the underlying PDFs...the horrid web interface just seems to get between me and the info I want.

Thanks again, Arthur. Your knowledge of these old beasts is invaluable.

That is why most guys index mark the nut..problem w/that on an old chassis is you are assuming the guy before you was correct....

The Manual says to loosen the nut 2 turns when disassembly/sliding of spines is required, so tightening two turns when reassembling would put you back to where it was originally...........

Thank you again, Arthur. The new transmission is in the car. I'll figure out appropriate torque once I get it back on its wheels and settle the driveshaft into place.

Pretty much nothing I've touched on this chassis makes me think the last guy was 'right', so I'll find a way to measure torque.
