M130 Engine Oil Selection
I did an oil and filter change on the 250 yesterday (in addition to a valve adjust and slapping on a new valve cover gasket) and I used the same 15W40 Rotella that I put in my 240D (and Suzuki Samurai and Lincoln Town Car when I had them). I got to wondering what you other vintage gasser owners use. So, what do you like?

I will be using Rotella when I get my engine back together. 15W40 seems a little thick to me but if it works for you, go for it.

So what's different about Rotella and the 'diesel' engine oils?
I just put Mobil1 10W40 ("high-mileage") in the '72, but I haven't fired it yet. (still putting the transmission back in).

I've been using Castrol GTX dino oil for years in my 250C.
Whatever weight I can get, as long as the larger viscosity # is a 40 or 50..... Jim

Diesel oils have more of certain additives that are good for non-roller cam followers. I read an article on it in Hot Rod, but I can't remember when.

They also have detergents suited for diesel combustion and more detergents in general. While this helps keep your engine squeaky clean, it can be tough on old gaskets, especially old-style main seals. Diesel oil has good protection and ratings however and is an excellent quality oil typically. Since the diesels have the propensity to generate a lot of soot, the oil is designed to deal with this. In my old girl, with her 40+ year old rope type main seal, I'm sticking to the tried and true. Basic 10w-30 dino juice. So far no leaks on an original engine, but I do change the oil frequently to try to prevent the nasty buildup. This article makes diesel oil sound downright scary!
http://www.zddplus.com/TechBrief6%20-%20Diesel%20Oil%20Use%20in%20Classic%20and%20High-Performance%20Gasoline%20Engines.pdf I wouldn't think it's all that bad, but you might as well stick to what was designed for your engine. As sad as it sounds, one of the main reasons I liked the rotella was because it was cheep and came in those large containers. Now thankfully, they're all starting to use larger containers.

Please note that the article was written by someone who wants to sell us his ZDDP oil additive.
