W108 250S Gas Tank Screen Removal
I have a 250S, and there is a plastic screen in gas tank that you get to from the trunk. However, there is no way to get a wrench on it. The top of the plastic is as smooth as the trunk. How do I get the screen out without destroying it? Thank you.

The tank screen is not gotten from the trunk..it is accessed from the bottom of the tank..
http://catalog.worldpac.com/mercedesshop/sophio/image.jsp?title=Fuel%20Screen&url=http%3A//img.eautopartscatalog.com/live/E101072362OES.JPG It is a hex head and a trick I have used for years is to invert a spark plug socket on an extension and stick it in the screen hex and remove the screen with a ratchet ... http://members.aol.com/ajdalton7/screen

The top flat plastic cap you see is the trunk deck cover for the fuel sending unit.

Thanks. I just got the official ''Factory Service Manual" and all it says is ''remove the screen". Thank you all.

Yep, I removed the screen in my 6.3 just yesterday. It's a brass nut that needs to be removed using a 24mm hex bit. These cost about $100 from sears, so I bought a bolt with a 24mm head and two nuts that made a a tool which worked a treat.
I replaced mine but the old one came out really well after I soaked it in parts cleaner so I could have saved it. If you reuse the old one, you'll need to replace the o-ring which should be available through world pac. The fuel sender is removed by undoing a bunch of 8mm bolts. If you have crap in your tank, best thing to do is remove the tank and wash it out with acid so that no more crap gets into the fuel screen. Thanks. Al

There is no screen on top...
that is to remove the fuel gauge sender.
I have pulled 2 fuel screens, and both were extremly clean.

Ok, I checked the fuel lines near the tank. It looks like they have a few dry rot cracks on them. The fuel pump must be getting air. I have to change the lines. I did not mess with the screen. I dont' think that is the problem. I did siphon out the gas, and the old gas looked good, so I'm going to leave the screen for now. These old fuel lines need replaced all the way to the front of the car. Thank you.

can anyone verify the size of the hex at the bottom of the fuel tank screen?
i ordered a 24mm hex a couple days ago, and it came in today but it is too big.

Use an inverted spark plug socket. Fits perfectly.
