71 280se engine Q's

I replaced the plugs in my 280se and the only normal appearing ones were in 3 and 6-needless to say I could not get the engine to run smoothly until I replaced all of the plugs. I changed to the crane xr700 and wonder if I should have disconnected an existing component which would be affecting the plugs?
On another note where is the wire which is indicated in the manual I have as being attached to the solenoid at the rear of the injection pump supposed to go? At this juncture my engine is running smoothly after replacing the fuel pump and routing the return line directly to the tank. Thanks for the help

What kinda fouling are ye gettin with plugs 1,2,4,5 ? And if ye think its electrical prob then worn out spark plug noise suppresor caps could be the culprit. Seen this myself where beat plug suppress caps on 280/8 caused coupla cold firing plugs.

The offending plugs were coated with a thin film of carbon and wet from not firing before I changed them.
I do not know what an end cap is unless you mean the tip of the plug where the wire attaches-if this is the case the end caps were not worn.
Today I started the engine and it ran for a few minutes and stopped. I waited a minute or so and it started right up and then stopped-the same way a manually operated diesel fuel solenoid shut off stops a 240d engine-ugh!

Start with the simple and cheap things first. The wire off the injection pump should probably be left off. It is most likely for the fuel shut off solenoid added for USA emisssion regulations.

Take an ohm meter and check the resistance on all the spark plug wires and ends firts. Measure from the distributor contact to the spark plug connection. The resistor ends on the original wire sets can go bad. IF you have carbon wire sets get rid of them. the original wires were solid copper. We can go on to the more complex and expensive items next.

The set of plug wires are made in Germany and are sold under the name 'Bremi'. I checked each wire and the resistance measured 5.7 ohms. The coil to cap wire measured .930 ohms.
After reconnecting the wires to their respective plugs, I started the engine and it ran without stopping for the thermostat cycle-about 175 or so. There was no hesitation on several restarts.
For some reason there was some minor corrosion on the end of #5 wire which I cleaned with a pick. The coil resistance was good at each terminal with the spring-loaded rotor pickup measuring over 85 ohms. I have the car on blocks so am unable to drive off at this time although I did put the transmission in drive without any disruption in the engine other than the normal decrease in RPM. What should I try next in order to check and or clean a potentially faulty component which during this last engine cycle di not rear it's head? Thanks.
