major problems with engine
ok the problem with my 1972 mercedies benz is that there seems to be trouble with the way its running. when ever it is is idle the oil presure goes down to 15 on the gadge when it is supost to be at 45. while it is going down the generator light comes on. then it gradualy keeps getting lower and lower till it dies then i have to start it back up. and the oil presure goes and dose the same thing all over again. alright and when i need to speed up really fast like from a dead stop and i puch the gas it will jsut die. so i think it has somthin to do with the dual carbs in it.
so if anyone can tell me it they know anything about it or somethin i could do tell me. it has been doin this for months and i cant stand it no more. |

15 at idle on a warm engine is prety normal (I think the minimum allowed is anout 8). I use 10W40 weight oil or even 20W50 in my old Benzes, not modern thin oils like 10W30. 5W30 etc... Stallng could be caused by vacuum leaks, over-retarded ignition timing/worn points, and carb faults/miss-adjustment. I'd look at the first items before messing with the carbs, though you might be able to raise the carb idle-speed adjustment slightly to make it driveable, or keep it running long enough to check the other items. The '72 Zenith carbs also have idle-fuel cut-off solenoids. You might check to see if they're getting 12 volts with the ignition on. Happy Motoring, Mark
